# Stripe Managed Payments Alternatives: 5 Merchant of Record Options Compared

Payments, Tax & Compliance | Enzo Bermond | Oct 29, 2026

![Post image](https://blog.cleeng.com/hubfs/stripe%20managed%20payments%20alternatives%20compared.webp)

Stripe now sells its own Merchant of Record. Stripe Managed Payments takes indirect tax off your plate, but it only covers transactions that qualify, puts Link’s name in front of your customers, and adds a 3.5% fee on top of already high processing costs.

If you run a subscription business, that raises a fair question: is Stripe’s Merchant of Record the right fit, or would a dedicated one serve you better? This guide compares Stripe Managed Payments with five alternatives (Cleeng Merchant, Paddle, Fungies.io, Creem and FastSpring) on cost per renewal, coverage, payment recovery and who each one is built for.

## Key takeaways

- On a $14.99 monthly plan, Stripe Managed Payments costs $1.36 per renewal (9.1%). Cleeng Merchant costs $0.72 (4.8%), the lowest of the six providers compared.
- Stripe only acts as Merchant of Record on transactions that pass its eligibility checks, and existing subscriptions can’t be moved into Managed Payments.
- Best fit: Cleeng Merchant for subscription businesses in streaming, sports and media; Creem or Fungies.io for indie sellers and small SaaS teams; Paddle or FastSpring for established software companies.

## **Stripe Managed Payments: what it is and what it costs**

Stripe Managed Payments is Stripe’s Merchant of Record add-on for businesses selling digital products and software subscriptions. On eligible transactions, Stripe becomes the legal seller and takes on indirect tax, fraud prevention, dispute handling and transaction-level customer support, all delivered under Link, its consumer wallet brand.

![stripe managed payments](https://blog.cleeng.com/hs-fs/hubfs/stripe%20managed%20payments.webp?width=2940&height=1442&name=stripe%20managed%20payments.webp)

Stripe acquired the Merchant of Record Lemon Squeezy in 2024. Managed Payments brings that model into the Stripe Dashboard itself, which makes it the obvious option for businesses that already run on Stripe. The question is what that convenience costs, and what it leaves out.

### Stripe Managed Payments pricing

Stripe Managed Payments costs 3.5% per successful transaction, charged on top of standard Stripe processing (2.9% + $0.30 for US cards). The 3.5% is calculated on the full amount including tax, and Stripe Billing’s 0.7% applies separately to subscriptions. For a US seller, that’s 6.4% + $0.30 per domestic transaction before Billing, and 8% to 10% on international cards with currency conversion.

### What transactions it covers

Managed Payments isn’t switched on for your business as a whole. You enable it per Checkout Session or Payment Link, and each transaction has to clear four checks before Stripe becomes the legal seller:

1. Every product in the cart has an eligible tax code.
2. The buyer’s country is inside Stripe’s tax coverage.
3. The subscription was started through a Managed Payments checkout.
4. The account keeps a low dispute rate and a clean risk history.

A transaction that fails any check stays under your liability. If Stripe later rules a product ineligible, the tax responsibility returns to you.

Existing subscriptions can’t be moved in either. A business with an established subscriber base ends up running two liability models side by side: new subscribers under Stripe, current subscribers under its own tax registrations and filings. Moving current subscribers across means asking them to check out again, with the churn risk that brings.

### **Tax coverage, payment recovery and fraud**

Stripe covers indirect tax compliance in more than 75 countries. As of October 2, 2026, businesses based in Japan, Mexico and Singapore aren’t covered for domestic sales.

Failed renewals are retried through Stripe Billing’s Smart Retries, billed separately and run through a single processor. Stripe says businesses recover around 55% of failed payments on average, but recovery vendor [Redux Payments](https://reduxpayments.com/blog/stripe-smart-retries-explained), after auditing 200+ B2C Stripe Billing accounts, puts the consumer figure at 25% to 35%.

On fraud, Stripe reports that Radar reduces fraud by 38% on average. Under Managed Payments, though, Stripe sets the fraud rules and may accept a dispute it judges unlikely to win. Reporting is the standard Stripe Dashboard and Billing reports; retention analytics and churn prediction aren’t part of the service.

### **What your customers see**

Your customers see Link as the seller. Card statements read LINK.COM\*, receipts come from Link, and custom checkout domains aren’t supported. If a support request goes unanswered for 48 hours, Stripe may refund the customer without your approval.

Weighing Stripe against Cleeng specifically? Our [Stripe vs Cleeng guide](https://blog.cleeng.com/stripe-vs-cleeng-subscription-billing) covers the three ways to combine them, including keeping Stripe as your processor.

## **Cleeng Merchant: Merchant of Record on every subscription transaction**

[Cleeng Merchant](https://cleeng.com/products/merchant-of-record) is a [Merchant of Record built for subscription businesses](https://blog.cleeng.com/what-is-a-merchant-of-record), from broadcasters and sports rights holders to streaming and OTT services. Cleeng is the legal seller on every web transaction, initial and recurring, for every product, market and subscriber. It powers subscriptions for services such as Big Ten Network, TOD, VBTV, and Tennis Channel.

![cleeng merchant of record](https://blog.cleeng.com/hs-fs/hubfs/cleeng%20merchant%20of%20record.webp?width=2940&height=1504&name=cleeng%20merchant%20of%20record.webp)

Pricing is 2.9% + $0.29 per transaction, all-in. Payment processing, [local payment methods](https://blog.cleeng.com/local-payment-methods-for-global-subscription-growth), fraud tools, [dunning](https://blog.cleeng.com/dunning-best-practices), chargeback defense and Merchant of Record services sit inside that one rate, with one line on the invoice in every market. There are no per-cart eligibility checks, no new-subscriptions-only rule and no split between covered and uncovered sales, so finance reconciles a single liability model for the whole subscriber base.

Cleeng handles [tax calculation](https://blog.cleeng.com/tax-calculation-collection-remittance-for-d2c-digital-subscriptions-guide), filing, remittance and liability across 13,000+ tax jurisdictions and 37 currencies, backed by PCI DSS and [SOC 2 Type 2](https://blog.cleeng.com/soc-2-type-2-certification-confirms-cleengs-commitment-to-data-security) and [SOC 2 Type 1](https://blog.cleeng.com/soc-1-type-ii-certified) certifications audited annually.

The biggest difference from Stripe is in renewals. Cleeng Merchant recovers up to 50% of failed renewals, with retry schedules tuned per offer type and payment method rather than set once globally, and network tokens, account updater and 3DS applied only when required. It covers 95% of payment method volume worldwide, including local methods such as PIX Automático and GCash. [Fraud protection](https://blog.cleeng.com/payment-fraud-detection-prevention) is dual-layer: in-house blocking (reCAPTCHA, email verification, throttling and velocity limits) plus AI scoring on every attempt, and Cleeng disputes chargebacks on your behalf.

Results from Cleeng customers:

- **Involuntary churn** sits between 2% and 5%. One major US customer went from 7% to 1.5% in 12 months.
- **Conversion:** [VBTV lifted initial payment success in Brazil from 71% to 96% within a month](https://blog.cleeng.com/how-vbtv-hit-96-payment-success-in-brazil-with-localized-payments) of adopting PIX Automático.
- **Fraud:** chargeback rates run 80% below industry average. A major client cut chargebacks and refunds from 6% to 1% in nine months while doubling initial payment success from 37% to 75%.

Merchant also runs inside Cleeng’s Subscriber Retention Management suite: Core for subscriptions, access passes, entitlements and offers across web, mobile and CTV; ChurnIQ for retention analytics, churn prediction, winback analytics and forecasting; and Hi5 for customer care. A retries dashboard breaks recovery down by payment method, country and offer type, updated every 6 hours, and the Cleeng MCP server brings retries, recoveries and decline reasons into your AI tools. Businesses already on Stripe can keep it as their processor under Core and move to Merchant when they want Cleeng to carry the liability.

## **Paddle: built for B2B SaaS, costly at low price points**

Paddle is the default Merchant of Record for B2B SaaS and software companies, combining payments, subscription management, invoicing, tax compliance, and churn prevention in one platform. Its 5% + $0.50 per transaction bundles processing, sales tax and VAT across 100+ jurisdictions, and chargeback handling. Paddle reports a 50%+ recovery rate on failed payments and a 17% cut in involuntary churn from its Payment Recovery tool, which retries over a 30-day window with email, in-app and SMS messages.

![paddle mor](https://blog.cleeng.com/hs-fs/hubfs/paddle%20mor.webp?width=2940&height=1420&name=paddle%20mor.webp)

The fixed fee is the problem for consumer subscriptions. On a $5 plan, the $0.50 alone is 10% of the order, and Paddle asks sellers of products under $10 to agree custom pricing. Its free ProfitWell analytics and the rest of the platform are designed around software buyers rather than media subscribers.

## **Fungies.io: storefront and Merchant of Record for indie sellers**

Fungies.io is a Merchant of Record and no-code storefront builder for SaaS founders, digital creators and game developers. It charges 5% + $0.50 per sale, the same headline rate as Paddle, but applies it to products under $10 too. Fungies is the legal seller on every transaction, processes payments through Stripe, and states that it handles VAT, GST and US sales tax in 100+ countries.

![fungies mor](https://blog.cleeng.com/hs-fs/hubfs/fungies%20mor.webp?width=2940&height=1528&name=fungies%20mor.webp)

Dunning, smart retries and abandoned checkout emails are included without a cut of recovered revenue, along with fraud monitoring, MRR and ARR tracking, and a Google Analytics integration. Daily payouts help small teams with cash flow. At 5% + $0.50 it’s one of the more expensive options here, and it’s built for indie sellers rather than subscription businesses at scale.

## **Creem: low headline rate, plenty of add-on fees**

Creem is a Merchant of Record launched in 2024 for AI builders and bootstrapped SaaS teams. It supports subscriptions, usage-based pricing, credit wallets, license keys, revenue splits and a built-in affiliate program, and checkout can run on your own domain with your branding. Analytics come through an AI assistant that answers plain-language questions about revenue data.

![creem mor](https://blog.cleeng.com/hs-fs/hubfs/creem%20mor.webp?width=2940&height=1434&name=creem%20mor.webp)

At 3.9% + $0.40 per transaction, with no extra charge for international cards or subscriptions, Creem has the second-lowest headline rate on this list. Its documentation says it collects and remits VAT, GST and sales tax in 190+ countries, though third-party comparisons cite much lower figures, so confirm coverage for your markets. Add-ons raise the effective rate: 2% on revenue splits and affiliate transactions, $7 or 1% on non-EU payouts, 5% of revenue recovered from abandoned carts, and $25 per chargeback. Creem publishes no recovery rate.

## **FastSpring: mature platform, expensive per renewal**

FastSpring is a Merchant of Record for SaaS, software and digital goods sellers, with a hosted storefront and customizable checkout. It processes payments, collects and remits tax across 200+ jurisdictions (VAT, GST, sales tax and digital services taxes), manages subscriptions and responds to tax audits on your behalf. Fraud detection runs through a partnership with Sift.

![fastspring mor](https://blog.cleeng.com/hs-fs/hubfs/fastspring%20mor.webp?width=2940&height=1528&name=fastspring%20mor.webp)

FastSpring doesn’t publish pricing. Rates are negotiated on volume, and commonly reported figures are around 5.9% + $0.95 per transaction, rising to 8.9% for low-volume or high-risk accounts. That $0.95 fixed fee pushes effective rates on monthly subscriptions to 9% to 11%. Refunds keep the original transaction fee, new accounts wait 45 days for their first payout, and FastSpring publishes no recovery rate for its configurable dunning.

## **Stripe Managed Payments vs the alternatives: cost per renewal**

| **Solution** | **Headline pricing** | **Fee on a $14.99 monthly plan** | **Built for** | **Strengths** | **Weaknesses** |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Cleeng Merchant** | **2.9% + $0.29, all-in** | **$0.72 (4.8%)** | **Subscription businesses: streaming, sports, media** | **MoR on every transaction, multi-PSP routing, 27 payment methods, dunning, ChurnIQ, Hi5 and Core included** | **Built for subscriptions rather than one-off digital goods** |
| Creem | 3.9% + $0.40 | $0.98 (6.6%) | Indie hackers, AI builders | Low headline rate, revenue splits, affiliates | Add-on fees, $25 per chargeback, twice-monthly payouts |
| Paddle | 5% + $0.50 | $1.25 (8.3%) | B2B SaaS and software | Mature platform, long tax track record | $0.50 fixed fee, custom pricing under $10, monthly payouts |
| Fungies.io | 5% + $0.50 | $1.25 (8.3%) | Indie developers, digital products | Daily payouts, store builder, dunning included | Higher rate, built for small sellers |
| Stripe Managed Payments | 3.5% + Stripe processing (2.9% + $0.30) + Billing (0.7%) | $1.36 (9.1%) | Stripe users selling digital products | Stays inside an existing Stripe account | Eligibility checks on every transaction, new subscriptions only, Link brand on checkout, stacked fees |
| FastSpring | Negotiated, reported around 5.9% + $0.95 | $1.83 (12.2%) | Midsize software and gaming companies | Mature all-in-one stack, custom checkout | No public pricing, high fixed fee, 45-day first payout hold |

Fees assume a US card and each provider’s headline rate, excluding currency conversion and add-ons.

## **Coverage and published results compared**

Cleeng Merchant is the only option here that combines Merchant of Record coverage on every transaction with the widest tax reach, published churn and fraud results, and built-in retention analytics.

| **Solution** | **MoR scope** | **Tax coverage** | **Analytics** | **Published performance** |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Cleeng Merchant** | **Every transaction, every subscriber** | **13,000+ jurisdictions, 37 currencies** | **Retries dashboard, ChurnIQ churn prediction, Cleeng MCP** | **Involuntary churn 2–5%, chargebacks 80% below industry** |
| Stripe Managed Payments | Eligible transactions, new subscriptions only | 75+ countries | Dashboard and Billing reports | 25–35% B2C recovery (Redux Payments audit), fraud down 38% with Radar |
| Paddle | Every transaction | 100+ jurisdictions | ProfitWell analytics | 50%+ recovery, involuntary churn down 17% |
| FastSpring | Every transaction | 200+ jurisdictions | Revenue and order reporting | None published |
| Fungies.io | Every transaction | 100+ countries | MRR and ARR tracking | 0.04% dispute rate |
| Creem | Every transaction | 190+ countries (self-reported) | AI revenue assistant | None published |

Performance figures are each provider’s own published claims unless another source is named.

## **Which Stripe Managed Payments alternative is right for you?**

The right Merchant of Record depends on what you sell and whether you already have subscribers. For indie sellers and small SaaS teams, Creem and Fungies.io are quick to set up. Paddle and FastSpring suit established software companies.

If you already have subscribers, Stripe Managed Payments carries a specific risk. Any transaction that fails an eligibility check stays under your liability, and your existing subscriptions can’t move in at all. You’d pay a premium for Merchant of Record coverage on part of your business while keeping your own tax registrations for the rest.

For subscription businesses, Cleeng Merchant is the strongest choice. It costs the least per renewal, acts as Merchant of Record on every transaction, and keeps your brand in front of subscribers. It also comes with the tools that grow recurring revenue: optimized renewals, churn analytics, customer care and subscription management, in one platform.

What is the best Merchant of Record for subscription services?

For consumer subscription businesses such as streaming, sports and media, Cleeng Merchant has the lowest cost per renewal of the providers compared here ($0.72 on a $14.99 monthly plan) and acts as Merchant of Record on every transaction, including renewals from existing subscribers. Paddle and FastSpring are stronger fits for B2B software.

How much does Stripe Managed Payments cost?

Stripe Managed Payments costs 3.5% per successful transaction on top of Stripe processing (2.9% + $0.30 for US cards), plus 0.7% for Stripe Billing on subscriptions. On a $14.99 monthly plan, that’s about $1.36 per renewal.

Can I move existing subscriptions to Stripe Managed Payments?

No. Managed Payments only applies to subscriptions started through a Managed Payments checkout. Existing subscribers stay under your own tax registrations unless they check out again.

Do I need a Merchant of Record?

You need one if you don’t want to register for, collect and file sales tax and VAT in every market you sell to, or carry liability for fraud and chargebacks yourself. A payment processor such as Stripe on its own leaves you as the merchant of record. Our guide to [what a Merchant of Record is](https://blog.cleeng.com/what-is-a-merchant-of-record) explains the model in detail.

Who are the top Merchant of Record providers?

Paddle, FastSpring, Creem and Fungies.io focus on software and digital products, and Stripe Managed Payments suits businesses already running on Stripe. Cleeng Merchant is built for subscription businesses in streaming, sports and media.
